A must-see historical city on the Red Sea
Located in the Om Al-Joud district of Makkah, the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa is where devotion and artistry come together. This world-renowned facility is dedicated to producing the Kiswa, the intricate black silk covering of the Holy Kaaba, adorned with Quranic verses embroidered in gold-plated thread.
The Kingdom’s commitment to the Kiswa dates back to 1927, when King Abdulaziz Al Saud established the first specialized workshop for its production. In 1977, the current factory was inaugurated to expand and modernize this tradition. Later, under the reign of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the factory was renamed the King Abdulaziz Complex and placed under the supervision of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
Over the decades, the factory has evolved with technological advancements, incorporating electronic looms and precision equipment, yet it has always remained rooted in the sanctity and tradition of its purpose.
A visit to the complex offers a rare opportunity to witness the meticulous artistry behind one of the Islamic world’s most revered symbols. Over 200 skilled artisans work across departments including machine and hand embroidery, silk weaving, gold threadwork, printing, and final assembly.
Visitors can explore these various stages of production, gaining insight into the delicate processes that culminate in the annual replacement of the Kiswa.
For centuries, Muslims have anticipated the ceremonial changing of the Kiswa on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah. In recent years, the tradition shifted to the 1st of Muharram to better align with preservation needs and operational logistics.
The King Abdulaziz Complex welcomes Muslim visitors interested in exploring this extraordinary facet of Islamic heritage. Individual visits can be booked online, while tour operators and Hajj or Umrah campaign organizers must coordinate group visits through the official website of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.
